WHAT IS HEALTH INFORMATICS?
Professionals who capture, transmit and use health information in a variety of health care settings. They gather healthcare data, develop effective information systems and procedures, and supply healthcare providers with access to shared information by ensuring secure storage and accessibility of patient data, collaborate with various stakeholders to optimize technology solutions, analyse health data for insights, compliance with regulations, and contribute to improved patient care and healthcare processes through the strategic application of information technology.
WHAT ARE THE EDUCATION PATHWAYS?
Health Informatics encompasses different fields of study, including biotechnology, computer sciences, statistics, engineering and molecular biology. This career field is for the students of sciences, preferably Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology. However, a student with PCB subject combinations can also explore higher education in this space. There are B.Sc (Hons) courses in Health Informatics or Biological Sciences, which can be followed by Master’s or even PG Diploma. Besides the above subjects, a degree in computational biology, biomathematics, computer science, life sciences or statistics are also acceptable programs. For doctoral programs, focussed study in genetics and genomics will be required. There are some international certifications like Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) and AMIA Health Informatics Certificate (AHIC) in USA supporting a career move in this direction.
